Liberty Pole Pecan Pie

Liberty Pole Pecan Pie

It is normal for distilleries to have a core range that they produce in quantity and consistency. It sees their whiskies reach the widest audience and lets customers know what to expect each time they open the bottle. Occasionally they may release special offerings like a yearly or seasonal offerings. Mingo Creek Craft Distillers, more commonly known by their brand name Liberty Pole, takes the even rarer step (though they are certainly not the first or only) of releasing a single barrel. This is usually done by distillers when a single barrel has a unique quality all on its own that the distillers want to share with the world. Liberty Pole has released a number of single barrels over the years and this one is named Pecan Pie for the qualities reminiscent of grandma’s classic dessert. This barrel began as one of their standard ryes, (61% rye, 13% red winter wheat, 13% rye malt, and 13% six-row distillers malt) but was aged for a minimum of 36 months and is one of only 104 bottles.

Mingo Creek Craft Distillers, better known by their brand name Liberty Pole, are a craft distillery in southwestern Pennsylvania who deftly weave the line between history and imagination. Their whiskey-focused portfolio includes offerings made using heritage grains like bloody butcher corn and Pennsylvania rye. But they’re not afraid to get creative, as seen by their Peated Bourbon. After seeing what peat could do with with corn, they wondered…why not rye? A few years later, the Liberty Pole Peated Rye was born. The result was so successful, it has become a staple of their portfolio and is released about once a year.

Smoke Wagon

Smoke Wagon

Scotchology, as the name might imply, focuses primarily on scotch with a healthy interest in other world whiskies. One realm we generally stay away from is bourbon. This is not because we think lesser of the quintessentially American spirit, but rather because it is its own realm in many ways, and scotch provides us with plenty of pathways. Sometimes, however, it is nice to take a small deviation. Smoke Wagon is a high rye bourbon from Nevada Distilling, This small batch offering was first released in 2016 and is a mix of younger, more vibrant rye and older, more complex bourbon. The spirits themselves are from spirits producer MGP, as actually distilling in the heat of Nevada can result in high loss due to evaporation.
