Founders Series: Your Land, My Land, Westland

Founders Series: Your Land, My Land, Westland

The Founders Series takes advantage of Scotchology’s founders meeting to celebrate our 10th Anniversary in August of 2023. Since we can’t meet in person as often as we were able to when the club first started, we decided to make the most of our time together and sampled a truly broad, exciting range of whiskies in some semblance of batching. The first batch features Westland, an American distillery we have gone to early and often. But a handful of reviews doesn’t quite convey how often we have been there individually or in groups, or how many expressions we have tried and bought for our private collections over the years. This series will expand whenever we gather continue focused explorations of brands or concepts.

SnapShot: Whiskyfabric Whirlwind 3

This series of SnapShot posts derives from whisky exchanges with various folks who are part of what is colloquially known as the Whiskyfabric, a term created by Canadian whisky writer Johanne McInnis, otherwise known as the Whisky Lassie, to encompass the online community of whisky writers, creators, reviewers and enthusiasts that exist in the realm of social media. Over the past couple of years, we here at Scotchology have exchanged whiskies via mail with a number of fascinating people across the United States and Canada and finally decided to sit down and taste the bounty in a series of posts based on some loose collective logic. We’ve already done on post focusing on scotch and one on world whiskies. This post focuses on scotches from Islay. Ever wonder what it’d be like to sit down with us in the moment, with all our bias and palate preferences at the ready? Read on to get a close approximation!

Port Charlotte 10 Year

Port Charlotte 10 Year

The distillery of Port Charlotte lies two miles south of Bruichladdich facing Loch Indaal and is where the parent company’s peatier whiskies are distilled. Though the distillery was resurrected some years ago by Bruichladdich, the Port Charlotte 10 year is a recent addition to the stable of offerings. The barley used is from the Shire of Invernes, Scotland’s largest county, which covers parts of the northern Highlands and the Outer Hebrides. Even the casking is particular, with 75% of the maturation happening in first or second fill American whisky casks, and with 25% coming from second fill French wine casks. We assume that since the website does not list the exact American whiskies or French wines, it must mean there are many potential options and thus would be impossible to list for a uniform bottling expression.
