Oban 15 Year Cask Strength

Oban was founded in 1794 by John and Hugh Stevenson on the west coast of Scotland, across from the isle of Tobermorey. It is one of the smallest distilleries in Scotland, having only two pot stills and a distilling capacity under 700,000 liters a year. Because of distillery’s location in the town of Oban, the only avenue for expansion in recent years was discovered to contain remains of archaelogical significance and thus Oban was prevented from continuing. Due to the distillery’s limited production, the core range is not large, mostly comprising their standard 14 Year, Little Bay and Distillers Edition. This 15 Year Cask Strength is a US-exclusive release matured for over ten years and finished for four years in both ex-Oloroso and ex-Palo Cortado sherry casks from Andalusia, Spain.

Oban Little Bay

While Oban has been distilling for over two hundred years, their geographic restraints have kept them from growing into a truly giant place of production. For many years, their single malts were relegated to the 14 Year and Distillers Edition. Therefore it was a welcome surprise when they introduced a new No Age Statement offering to their lineup in 2015, the Oban Little Bay. The Scottish Gaelic name for the town, An t-Òban, means “little bay”. The single malt is blended in 200 liter ex-bourbon barrels, the smallest barrels available at the distillery. This was at one point their travel retail exclusive.

Oban Distillers Edition

We didn’t write a review for the Oban Distillers Edition until almost a year after buying the bottle because of a very simple reason: we drank the damn thing too fast. It was gone before we could put proverbial pen to paper! By common consensus, this was the first club’s favorite. Hence, we decided to treat ourselves to an early Christmas and revisited something we know we enjoy. The bonus is that it now enables us to put our glasses down long enough to write a review. Barely. This is a unique expression from an already storied distillery.
